Gay rights law repealed 2-1 as Anita triumphs

MIAMI (AP) — A controversial law prohibiting discrimination against homosexuals in housing and employment was repealed by a margin of more than 2 to 1 in a special Dade County election yesterday.
With 439 of 446 precincts reporting, the vote was 200,058 for repeal, 87,871 against. A simple majority decides the issue, which has drawn international attention as the focal point of the gay rights movement.
Anita Bryant, the, singer who led the fight to repeal the controversial ordinance, embraced her husband and
four children and told supporters at her victory party: "The laws of God and the cultural values of man have been vindicated."
"We'll continue from here," said Jack Campbell, leader of the homosexual campaign to retain the ordinance. "We've unified the gay community and brought national attention to the issue."..
Miss Bryant said she would carry the campaign against similar ordinances to communities across the nation.
